By noon the following day, Lexi felt close to her old self again. With a determined effort she put Dylan out of her mind and set about cooking up a storm for her guests. The weather remained warm and clear, so borrowing her parents’ outdoor table and chairs, she decided a cold meat and salad buffet, plus fruit and cheese platters would be a fitting meal to eat outdoors on the terrace. This would also get them away from any lingering paint smells and the dreary sight of the unfinished formal rooms.

Her mother, bless her, had baked an apple crumble and even provided the whipped cream and custard as an extra something for her to serve, and her father dropped it off as well as the table and chairs on his way to golf that morning.

With the table set, fresh flowers in a vase in the kitchen, which would be the natural place they’d all gather, and the food prepared, Lexi showered and then dressed in a white flowing skirt and pink blouse. She had just finished putting a light touch of make-up on when she heard the first car pull up in the driveway.

Walking out of the bedroom, she glanced at Allie’s diary, waiting for her on the end of her bed. All morning she’d been tempted to read a few pages, but hated doing so in a rush. The diarist’s words were something to linger over, like a fine wine, and definitely not something to fit in between other activities. Later she would indulge in a long bath and a good read.

Downstairs, she opened the front door to welcome Fiona with a tight hug. ‘Thanks for coming.’

‘I bought wine and then remembered you can’t have any!’ Fiona laughed.

‘I’m sure the others will make up for it.’

Right behind Fiona’s car, Cara’s sleek black Mercedes stopped. Before Cara was fully out of her car, Emily’s car appeared around the corner of the drive and Lexi smiled when she saw that Lyndsay was in the passenger seat.

‘Why is Lyndsay here?’ Cara frowned, at the same time giving Lexi an air kiss beside her cheek.

‘Em must have invited her.’ Lexi shrugged and waved at them. ‘The more the merrier.’

‘A bit rude if you ask me.’ Cara sniffed, looking dreadfully thin, yet immaculate and sleek in a black skirt suit. Sadly her clothes were the same type as she wore to the office. Didn’t she have anything loose and pastel? Or was her wardrobe full of business skirts and slacks in black and grey? When did Cara become so uptight and nasty? It pained Lexi that her friend had changed so much, but then, so had she, so who was she to judge?

Lexi smiled even more widely at her and waved her into the house. When she wasn’t annoyed at Cara she was feeling sorry for her. Could they just have one day where everyone relaxed and had a good time? She’d organised this lunch as a sort of peace day for everyone. Where work and office demands were forgotten and attitudes replaced with smiles.
